I can't remember how many hours I spent scouring the internet for packing lists for a trek to Mt. Pulag. It was my first time and I was beyond excited. Plus I wanted to make sure that I had everything I need to survive the whole thing.
I didn't have any mountaineering gear so most of my stuff I got from R.O.X. or from Park Square (Johnyee Campsite, Coleman and True Value). These are great places to get camping/travelling/mountaineering gear.
So in the end, here's what I came up with:
TNF Sure Shot Backpack
Trekking shoes
Sleeping Bag
Reflectorized Earth Pad (I don't know how exactly to call it)
1L Water bottle
Inflatable square pillow
Headlamp
Mess kit
Rain Jacket
Fleece Jacket
Thermal pants and long sleeves
Long sleeved shirt
2 pairs convertible pants
2 t-shirts
2 socks
2 gloves
small Aquazorb towel
change of clothes for baguio (which we left at a secured location near the DENR station)
toiletries
trail food
Swiss knife
ziplocs
garbage bag
camera
When I compared my stuff with my companions it felt like I overpacked. Which I guess I did a bit. I had at least a set of clothes more than the others. BUT, in the end, nagamit ko din lahat.
I wore the convertible pants, a t-shirt and the rain jacket on our trek to the campsite. The trail was super muddy na sobrang kadiri ipasok sa tent ang pants ko. So the 2nd pair of pants proved useful. I slept wearing thermals, pants, t-shirt, long sleeved shirt and fleece jacket. It was that cold. I think 4 degrees. I put on the rain jacket and extra pair of socks when we started the assault to the summit. It wasn't enough.
The sun was shining bright on the trek back to the campsite and within five minutes into the trek I was already shedding layers until it was just the thermals, a t-shirt and the pants left.
If I will do the trek again, maybe I can do away without the extra set of pants and shirt. I just have to be more careful not to get my pants too muddy from the trek. (Probably have the pants hemmed so it doesn't get dragged. Haha). It would be great if I can do it with a much lighter bag or at least a much stronger back next time :-)
